The National Society for Human Rights Calls on the International Community to Uphold Its Responsibilities and Adhere to Humanitarian and Ethical Standards on the Occasion of International Human Rights Day
The National Society for Human Rights in Saudi Arabia joins the global celebration of the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which this year carries the theme “Our Rights… Our Future… Now”. This theme underscores the urgency of immediate action to ensure and safeguard human rights for all, without exception. Every year, United Nations bodies, states, and organizations worldwide commemorate this occasion.
The Society has emphasized that it is deeply distressing that the world continues to witness one of the greatest humanitarian tragedies, violating the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Its preamble warned that “disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind.” The horrific crimes and acts of genocide committed by Israel against innocent civilians in Gaza for over a year epitomize this humanitarian concern, as the world marks the 76th anniversary of the declaration. Furthermore, Israel’s ongoing attacks on several countries in the region, including its recent assaults on Syria, demonstrate that the threat to fundamental human rights persists. This demands serious and urgent international action to prevent further escalation of violations caused by Israeli aggression.
In addition, the Society has highlighted that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached an unbearable level, and the continued deterioration of conditions there must not be tolerated under any circumstances.
The Society has also strongly condemned the Israeli Knesset’s law banning the operations of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), citing its disastrous consequences for the residents of Gaza and the West Bank. This measure constitutes a violation of international law and sets a dangerous precedent that contradicts the commitments of UN member states under the United Nations Charter.
Furthermore, Mr. Khalid bin Abdulrahman Al-Fakhri, the Chairman of the National Society for Human Rights, has stated that the continued support for Israel’s destabilizing actions in the region sends a dangerous message—that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and human rights conventions have no real impact, despite the UN and the international community’s repeated commitments to uphold and protect them. He called on the international community to take responsibility, adhere to humanitarian and ethical standards, abandon double standards in addressing human rights issues, and defend human rights without discrimination. Additionally, he stressed the necessity of holding Israel accountable for its grave and ongoing violations.
Al-Fakhri has also praised Saudi Arabia’s humanitarian role in supporting the Palestinian cause and its efforts to promote regional and international peace and security. He commended the Kingdom’s extensive diplomatic initiatives to achieve a two-state solution, including the formation of an international coalition and ongoing efforts to ensure that the Palestinian people obtain their full rights. These efforts aim to achieve just and comprehensive peace, restore regional stability, and foster prosperity.
