The European Union’s Visit to the National Society for Human Rights
On Tuesday 8/4/1437 AH, the Head of Division for GCC countries at European External Action Service, Mr. John O’Rourke, and his deputy Ms. Rosemarie Gili as well as the ambassador of the European Union to the Kingdom Mr. Adam Koulakh and their team have visited the National Society for Human Society. They have been welcomed by the Chairman of the Society, Dr. Mufleh Rabiean Al-Qahtani, and the Supervisor of the Society’ branch in the Eastern Province, Dr. Abdulgalil Al-Seif, the Secretary General of the Society, Mr. Khaled Al-Fakhri, the Responsible of the Training section in the Society, Dr. Faisal Moaidh Al-Sumeiri and the Secretary of the Chairman of the Society, Mr. Ahmed Mohammed Al Mahmoud. At the beginning of the meeting, the Chairman has presented a brief explanation regarding the Society’s activities, its contribution in spreading the human rights culture and the remarkable progress in human rights field in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. They have also talked about monitoring the municipal elections and how it represents the participation of individuals in the public life.
Besides, they have discussed many other human right issues such as the death penalty and the European Union’s attitude concerning the death penalty in Saudi Arabia which the Chairman has explained that it based on the Islamic Sharia and that the final death penalties sentences have been carried out against people accused of big terrorist crimes.
The Chairman of the Society has also asserted on the importance of respecting the States’ implementation of the provisions of its domestic law and the independence of its judicial work. The visiting delegation has understood the point of view of the Society and praised its efforts. At the end of the meeting, the visiting delegation thanked the Presidency of the Society for the warm reception and they stressed on the importance of exchanging views on matters relating to human rights.
