Press Release on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
The anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, this year, marks the pass of 75 years since such Declaration and all the United Nations main-bodies, States and organizations around the world are celebrating this anniversary. The National Society for Human Rights in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, while participating in the celebration of this global anniversary, is in great pain that the world today is witnessing one of the greatest violations of this Declaration in which it warns that “the violation of human rights has led to barbaric acts that have outraged the conscience of humankind”.
To illustrate, for more than two months, the Israeli forces have continued their barbaric bombardment, which has claimed the lives of thousands of innocent and unarmed people, most of them children, women and the elderly, and continue to comprehensively destroy Gaza and all its civilian facilities, including hospitals, schools, mosques and shelters.
In addition, the National Society for Human Rights has considered that the continuation of Western governments in providing all kinds of support to Israel to continue its fierce war sends a message with dangerous meanings that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with all the rights it contains, as well as the international human rights conventions based on it, are just documents for a group of people and not others. The continuous obstruction of the Security Council and preventing it from issuing a resolution to stop the continuous aggression against innocent and defenseless people has also dashed the hopes of the members of the drafting committee of the declaration. Besides, it has dashed the hopes of the Chairperson of the Committee, Mr. Leanor Roosevelt, who has worked strenuously for two years to write a universal declaration of rights that contributes to build a world of security, peace and freedom from barbarism.
The National Society for Human Rights hopes that the conscience of humanity will be awakened to stop this barbarism practiced by the Israeli forces.
Finally, the Chairman of the National Society for Human Rights, Mr. Khalid bin Abdul Rahman Al-Fakhri, has called on the international community to listen to the Arab-Islamic Ministerial Committee headed by His Highness the Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, where it provides a comprehensive and topical vision for an immediate end to this aggression, and to hold Israel accountable for its violations of the international law, and to return to the path of lasting and comprehensive peace called for by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
